Fix !!, I Can Play Angklung

By Didy - 6/21/2018

How excited I'm because today I can play this instrument.

I guess, I've never tried to play this instrument In the real Angklung show  like today. That's why I'm so excited to come to the show at Saung Angklung Udjo Bandung. Actually, I have no planning to visit this amazing place but because of my train to Jogjakarta will depart on Tuesday, 21st of June 2018 at 05:35 AM  (now I'm writing in the Kiara Condong Train Station, Bandung hahaha) and I've arrived to Bandung since 12:00 PM by 20th of June 2018, so that, I decided to hange out somewhere nearby the station.

Luckily my friends (my bule friends actually) can accompany me to visit Saung Angklung Udjo, I just texted them one by one because I'm pretty sure that they will love to enjoy the show even though I think they have attended to Angklung Show for several times since they study in Indonesia hahaha (actually I'm gonna forced you guys to accompany me even you don't want to wkwkwk).

Well, before I continue this post I'm gonna tell you what is Angklung, to make a clear what is Angklung exactly if you don't know, but if you have already known you can scroll it down.

Ok, Angklung is an Indonesian musical instrument consisting of two to four bamboo tubes suspended in a bamboo frame, bound with rattan cords.

Get it ?, Calm down, I'll show you the picture .

Lemme continue the explanation, the tubes are carefully whittled and cut by a master craftsperson to produce certain notes when the bamboo frame is shaken or tapped.

Each Angklung produce a single note or chord, so several players must collaborate in order to play melodies. Traditional Angklungs use pentatonic scale, but in 1938 musician Daeng Soetiga introduced Angklungs using diatonic scale; these are known as Angklung Padaeng. The Angklung is closely related to traditional customs, arts and cultural identity in Indonesia, played during ceremonies such as rice planting, harvest and circumcision.

The special black bamboo for the Angklung is harvested during the two weeks a year, and is cut at least three segments above the ground, to ensure the root continues to propagate.

Angklung education is transmitted orally from generation to generation, and increasingly in educational institutions. Because of the collaborative nature of Angklung music, playing promotes cooperation and mutual respect among the players, along with discipline, responsibility, concentration, development of imagination and memory, as well as artistic and musical feelings.

Ok enough for the explanation, I'll not make a boring article hehehhe. Literally, I know those insight from and also ask the girl ( the daughter of Saung Udjo's Owner).

I have gotten so many insight from the show, I will not regret with this decision, I swear !!.

I got so many positive vibes at Saung Angklung Udjo, and You know I got goosebumps when the players especially the children shake The Angklung and played some national song even international song with several languages.

OMG, why those kiddos look so talented hahahha, I envy to them. But I know from the MC (host) that they have been studying since they're really young around 5 or 6 years old.

I paid only 70,000 Rupiahs for an amazing show package tiket and also free water or tradiotional ice cream (yummy but I should choose one between mineral water or ice cream hehehe), and also I got a cute necklace with Angklung as liontin/pendant (should use the nacklace as the ticket) and sheets of synopsis, worth it !!.

There are some show or attractions at Saung Angklung Udjo:

1. Wayang Golek Demonstration

Which is a puppet drama about sundanese life, usually Wayang Golek is performed by Dalang as part of traditional custom ceremony such as ngaruwat, upacara bersih desa etc.

As philosophy "Wayang" means shadow, shadow from characteristic of people in the world such as wise, anger, kind, greedy and so on. In every wayang's performance always bring moral story, interesting !!.

In general, the Wayang show had made me laugh a lot hahahha because of their acting, so funny.

2. Helaran

Helaran means parade, helaran usually is played to be accompanied with a traditional custom ceremony such as circumcision or harvest party. In The Helaran, they use Angklung with salendro or pentatonic tone, which is real Sundanese Angklung tone (Da Mi Na Tu La Da), so cheerfull.

3. Tari Topeng (mask dancing)

Tari Topeng is a dramatic form of Indonesian dance in which one or more mask-wearing, ornately costumed performers interpret traditional narratives concerning fabled kings, heroes and myths, accompanied by gamelan music.

During the performane I adore how gorgeous the dancers in dancing, tarian klasik Topeng Kandahar with parahyangan style was danced so dramatic. The dancing was parted by 2 part, the first part is without topeng which is Layang Kumintir as messenger for Ratu Kencana Wungu from Majapahit, and the second part is with topeng which is Layang Kumintir camouflage as a strong and courageous man to fight to Prabu Menakjingga.

4. Mini Angklung

Small Angklungs was performed a simple songs not only for decoration thing. In the show mostly they played children songs, not only Indonesian children songs but also children songs over the world.

5. Arumba

Arumba is a traditional sundanese instrument which is made by bamboo with diatonic note, ARUMBA is an abbreviation, A stands for alunan (melodies), rum for rumpun (clumps/cluster) and ba for bamboo. Actually, Arumba from Saung Angklung Udjo is the famous Angklung group in Indonesia that usually perform on TV even international event.

6. Angklung Massal Nusantara

Angklung Massal Nusantara is like miniature of Indonesian culture, showed by junior and senior students from Saung Angklung Udjo. I love this part because they played some songs and dancing from all Indonesian district and they used costume as the same as the real traditional costume from the districts.

7. Play Angklung together

Fix !!, I can play Angklung but of course as an amateur one hehehe. In this part we played Angklung together leaded by Teh Amel (daughter of Saung Udjo's owner). I love her (*eh I love her performance), she leaded and tought us how to use an Angklung rightly and instructed to us to play an Angklung with hand sign.

All you need is only to memorize each hand side for each  different notes. Surprisingly, I heard a song after one by one the audience shook the Angklung. Really cool !!, You can imagine it hahahah.

8. Angklung Orchestra

Now is the turn of Angklung playing as an orchestra, combined with another instrument such as; guitar and percussion. I forget how many song that they played but I think more than 10, classic, contemporar, and even pop song.

9. Dance together

This is the last part, the performers spread to the audience's chair and ask to dance together (I succeed to drag Mark to dance with the dancer, gotcha !! Hahahha). I felt so sad in this last part because that means the show was end 😫.

Mark gotcha wkwkwk, peace ✌️

Overall, I love this experience because make me proud as Indonesian that how rich We are with culture and I think I should help to spread the culture over the world.
